CONDUCTING WORKSHOP
DIFFERENT MUSICAL GENRES and LEVELS
1. general information
- The OFMAN, Orquesta Filarmónica de La Mancha presents their II Musical Conducting Workshop. This distinct workshop will offer different musical genres where the conductors will be able to choose a level according to their knowledge and experience in conducting.
- The Workshop will offer four musical genres:
- Chamber Music (String Orchestra)
- Opera/Zarzuela (Spanish Opera)
- Oratorio
- Symphonic Repertoire
- All the genres will be offered in three levels:
- Elementary
- Intermediate
- Advanced
- A suitable repertoire will be available for each level. See the repertoire below.
- Besides the orchestra, the workshop will count with the participation of a choir and soloists for the repertoire that requires it.
- The workshop will allow up to 12 active participants and up to 30 auditors. Active conductors will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Auditors will be able to attend to all the classes and practices of the course.
- Registration will be open from March 15th through June 30th.
- There will be a Final concert on Sunday, July 14th. All the active participants will be conducting.
- This workshop will be led by the Spanish Maestro Francisco-Antonio Moya, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica de La Mancha.
2. LOCATION
The workshop will be held at the Concert Hall of Old Casino in Ciudad Real, Spain. (Caballeros Street, 3).
3. DATES
From July 8th through July 14th, 2024.
4. Podium Time AND RECORDINGS
- Each active conductor will have 120 minutes of Podium Time during the sessions at the workshop. These will be distributed by 60 minutes with Piano and 60 minutes with the Orchestra (Choir and Soloists when is it necessary).
- Each active conductor will have up to 10 minutes on the Podium at the Concert Day.
- All sessions with the Orchestra, Choir and Soloists including the Final Concert, will be recorded. This material will be available to the Conductors.

6. PLAN FOR THE WEEK
- On Monday July the 8th, the workshop will open with a session about the contents and theoretical-practical concepts in Conducting. See below.
- On Tuesday, July 9th, The sessions will continue with the rest of the Theoretical-practical concepts along with the Application of Gesture to different fragments of the pieces proposed for this workshop.
- On Wednesday, July 10th, the conductors will focus on the Chamber Music repertoire.
- On Thursday, July 11th, the conductors will focus on the Opera/Zarzuela repertoire.
- On Friday, July 12th, the conductors will focus on the Oratorio repertoire.
- On Saturday, July 13th, the conductors will focus on the Symphonic repertoire.
- Each active conductor will choose one work of each genre of the repertoire.
- The mornings from July 12th to the 15th, they will be specifically for the practices with Piano, these sessions are designed to prepare the sessions with the orchestra in the afternoons.
- At the end of each day there will be an open discussion where the active participants will receive a constructive and enriching feedback both from their peers and the Maestro.
- For reasons of time, the conductors will focus on movements and/or fragments of the works, as reflected in the repertory, rather than on the full works.

- The figure of the Conductor. The act of Conducting.
- Approach to different schools of conducting: K. Phillips, I. Musin, I. Saito, S. Celibidache, M. Rudolf.
- Concepts and basic terminology in conducting technique.
- The arm and its 3 dimensions. The baton.
- The initial position and sound spaces.
- The initial gesture.
- The physiognomy of the gesture in the different measures.
- Legato, Staccato. Different speeds of the arm in the movement.
- Stopping the gesture.
- Subdivision.
- Suggested conducting.

Clarification about the repertoire: Each active conductor will determinate the level they want to work on, and will conduct the preposed repertoire accordingly. However, he/she may also choose to conduct one or more works of different levels, if he/she deems it appropriate.
